The Unique Vatnajökull

Even if you have lived in Iceland your whole life, the wonders of Vatnajökull never cease to amaze and enthrall. The largest glacier in Europe tumbles down the highest mountain ridge in Iceland in tremendous icefalls, just above the Southeast part of Route one.

The ice giant covers 8% of Iceland and is 1000 meters thick at its thickest. That equals 30 m of ice evenly spread over all of Iceland – but we are in fact quite happy to keep it where it is. The Icelandic climate can be challenging enough without adding dozens of meters of ice on top of us.

Ice, water, and tectonic plate movements have shaped Vatnajökull’s surrounding landscape over millennia. Today, the whole area forms Europe´s largest natural reserve, The Vatnajökull National Park.

Where will Vatnajökull be next?

You can find a three-day planned schedule for Vatnajökull below. While the schedule listed is the most current, please keep in mind that it can change without notice.

How do you pronounce Vatnajökull?

That’s easy – compared to Eyjafjallajökull at least! It’s Vat-na-yuh-kutl.

What does the glacier’s name mean?

The glacier of the waters, referring to the many, large rivers flowing from it and the floods caused by the sub-ice volcanic eruptions.

Is there anything special about the interior of Vatnajökull?

Absolutely. The whole interior is inspired by an ice cave. The dominant colors are turquoise and sapphire blue, and a specially designed LED lighting and a glacier soundtrack create the right atmosphere. When you step on board it is virtually like entering the belly of the glacier. But don’t worry. The service is as warm as ever.

Like all other Icelandair aircraft, Vatnajökull has gate-to-gate WiFi so it’s very easy to instantly share the flying experience with friends and family.

Where Ice Meets Fire

Vatnajökull possesses spectacular beauty. At its rim, vibrantly turquoise icebergs float on glacial lagoons, and deep inside, the ever-changing ice caves mesmerize visitors with their display of sapphire blue light.

Adding some physics to the fun, glacier ice is in fact just plain, clear ice. It only appears blue because the blue wavelengths of sunlight pass all the way through the thick ice while red and yellow don’t. However, it is denser than usual ice and melts a lot slower – making it ideal for a prolonged cocktail hour.

Underneath all this cold and magnificent beauty, the glacier harbors a fiery hot secret. This huge sheet of ice is placed directly on top of one of the world’s most active volcanic fields. As you can probably imagine, that sometimes makes for a dramatic relationship.

Vatnajökull holds a special place in the hearts of Icelanders. With this unique aircraft, we want to share the natural wonders of Vatnajökull with our passengers and invite them to step aboard a glacier to experience a chunk of our home.
