Northern Lights Self Drive

Please note: Travel period for winter 2011/2012 has ended. Sales for winter 2012/2013 will open soon.

Iceland is the ideal holiday destination for viewing the Northern Lights. If you are an independent traveller, this package is a great way to search for them on your own while taking in sites like waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal areas and black sand beaches. The roads in Iceland are high standard and easy to navigate. And once you leave Reykjavik, there is little residual light, making for perfect viewing on clear nights.

The car provided comes with a GPS device pre-programmed with all sites of interest.  In addition, you will be provided with a folder that gives interesting historical and geological information.

We hope your visit to Iceland will be pleasant and nature is kind enough to show you dancing skies of the northern lights. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee sightings as Northern Lights is a natural phenomenon .

Upon arrival you will be met with a sign with your name on it at the airport and shuttled to the Procar location (3 minute drive). After receiving your car and travel itinerary you drive to Reykjavik where you can enjoy the evening. Check out our excellent restaurants. Overnight stay at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura. There is a nice swimming pool and spa at the hotel and various walking trails around the hotel.

You drive the Golden Lagoon Circle Route where some of the highlights for the first day are Gljúfrasteinn, Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Flúðir. The Golden Circle part focuses on many of Iceland’s most spectacular nature landmarks. It will take you past spouting geysers, the majestic waterfall Gullfoss as well as Þingvellir positioned on the rift between the tectonic plates of Europe and America and home of the world’s first parliament, Alþingi.

If you love steam baths try Fontana Spa at Laugarvatn, which is placed directly on top of natural hot springs. There is also a small Gallery just before you head out of Laugarvatn worth while visiting.

This night you will stay at Icelandair Hotel Flúðir. Hótel Flúðir is an excellent place for viewing northern lights with two Jacuzzis and a beautiful garden surrounded by rock boulders. The staff will guide you to the best sightings of Northern Lights and even prepare a picnic basket if ordered (for an additional fee). They are known for their delicious dishes made with regional organic ingredients.

Take time to explore the desolate beauty of Reykjanes peninsula marked by volcanic activity and large lava fields with numerous sulfur springs. You will also find Leif the Lucky Bridge over the Eurasian and North American continental tectonic plates. The peninsula is very picturesque and has many interesting hiking trails for those who like some exercise.

The Blue Lagoon is a true attraction for travelers in Iceland and has been voted by readers of “Conde Nast Traveller” as the best medical spa in the world, as well as one of 10 most exotic wellness retreats in the world by CNN. The Blue Lagoon offers guests to soak up in a scenic beauty and relaxation in the warm geothermal seawater, the water temperature in the Blue Lagoon is 37-39°C / 98-102°F. After the Blue Lagoon you head to Icelandair Hotel Keflavík. Do not continue to follow the Golden Lagoon route to Reykjavik after the Blue Lagoon!
