Northern Lights in Akureyri

Northern Lights in Akureyri

Discover the wonders of the Icelandic winter in close range of the Arctic Circle and a great viewing area fot the Northern Lights. This 4 night package gives you the opportunity to combine a visit to Reykjavik City and the charming town of Akureyri. First and last night are spent at the newly renovated 4 star hotel Natura in the Reykjavik while nights 2 and 3 are spent at recently opened 3 star Icelandair Hotel in Akureyri.

Included is a tour set out from Akureyri to try and spot the Northern Lights. To have the best chance of seeing them, locations each evening depend on where the lights are most likely to appear. Astronomers are predicting the 2011/12 Northern Lights viewing season to be the most active in years and there are few better places to see them than around Akureyri.

TIP: During last season’s Northern Lights viewing period, some of the most spectacular viewings took place in September and October.  These months are good times to visit Iceland because the weather is usually milder and there is more daylight to enjoy activities during the day.

  • Choose "Northern Lights in Akureyri" from the drop down menu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Flight from UK to Reykjavik (KEF) and overnight at Reykjavik Hotel Natura. If flying from London, we recommend the earlier flight to have the whole evening to spend in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Fly to Akureyri in the morning.* The 30 min flight departs from Reykjavik domestic airport which is situated close to the city's centre. Enjoy an afternoon and dinner in Akureyri before being picked up from your hotel, Icelandair Hotel Akureyri, at 21:45 for the Northern Lights tour.

Day 3: Explore Akureyri, the "capital of the North" and its wide range of activities and interesting places, museums, restaurants and shops along with the best ski slopes in the country. Around the town are some of the best nature scenes in Iceland, including lake Myvatn.

Day 4: Take a morning flight to Reykjavik and spend the day as you wish. Just like Akureyri there are possibilities of exploring the city or head out to the countyside to view some of Iceland's well known sites, such as the geysers or the Blue Lagoon.

Day 5: Departure back to the UK.

*If you choose the evening flight from London on Day 1, you will automatically be booked for the afternoon (14:00) flight to Akureyri instead of morning one.
