Today, 16th March, Icelandair began a new year-round service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Flights will be four times weekly from Iceland on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with connections from 6 airports in the UK.

Nearly two months prior to today’s inaugural flight, Icelandair announced an increase in capacity to the Windy City. This service expansion augments capacity with up to 9,000 additional seats per year using of one of their recently acquired Boeing 767s during the busy summer season, in lieu of the regularly scheduled 757.

Icelandair, in operation since 1937, has a long, illustrious history of providing flights from Europe to United States, including a 15-year stint to Chicago that began in 1973. Since then, Icelandair has continued to grow as an airline with new aircraft, modern amenities and more destinations. With the announcement of Chicago O’Hare International, Icelandair will now offer services to 16 North American gateways with connections from 6 UK airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports.

"We are excited to return to the Windy City as a bigger, better airline that can best serve the dynamic market of Chicago and its nearly 10 million inhabitants. Chicagoans will now have a refreshing alternative when traveling to Iceland and beyond, and Icelanders and Europeans will have access to the vibrant and historic city of Chicago. This is an exciting and significant moment for Icelandair and we look forward to welcoming Chicago aboard," said Birkir Holm Gudnason, CEO of Icelandair.

Icelandair has been the main catalyst in bridging Europe and North America through Iceland, helping boost tourism to their home country in record numbers and making it one of Europe’s hottest destinations. Icelandair flights to Chicago offer more options when traveling to the Midwest from Europe, with their modern Boeing fleet, three cabins of service, personal in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi capabilities for all passengers.
