Iceland: Land of the Midnight Run
- Iceland hosts Midnight Run, Laugavegur Ultra Marathon and Reykjavik Marathon
For those suffering from marathon withdrawal after Sunday’s London Marathon, Iceland has the perfect cure. Offering three races catering to different types of runners, Iceland and its clean air is a runners paradise.
Kicking off the running season is the Midnight Run on 23rd June geared towards runners of all abilities with 3km, 5km and 10km distances. The race takes place under the midnight sun and participants are invited to unwind following the race in the Laugardalslaug swimming pool and hot pots.
Next up is the gruelling Laugavegur Ultra Marathon on 18th July, a race on a famous hiking route, Laugavegur, that travels between two of Iceland’s most scenic areas, Landmannalaugar and Thórsmörk. While registration for the 2009 rate is closed, due to its dramatic setting and difficulty, this is an amazing race to watch.
And wrapping up the season is the Reykjavik Marathon on 22nd August, which coincides with Reykjavik Culture Night. The marathon draws thousands and traverses much of the city, including
scenic North Atlantic coastline. The race culminates with Reykjavik Culture Night, a city-wide celebration featuring musical performances, street entertainers and fireworks.
The best way to get from the UK to Iceland for these races is with Icelandair and an easy way to enjoy them in style is to take advantage of the £299* Deluxe City Break which features flights from London Heathrow or Manchester to Iceland and three nights accommodation at the four-star Hilton Reykjavik Nordica. Travel is valid through 15th September.
