Experience the midnight sun with never ending sunsets and long daylight hours near the Arctic Circle!

Book Now

Iceland's proximity to the Arctic Circle means summers with long daylight, especially the period between mid-May and mid-July. During this time, the sun never fully sets. Instead, it barely touches the horizon and then rises again.  It's a unique experience to be out enjoying late night sightseeing, bathing in hot springs and outdoor adventure - all while the sun shines high overhead!

Head north to Akureyri, and you can experience even longer daylight hours. Northeast Iceland has its own colourful beauty, with alpine mountains, salmon rivers and the enchanting Eyjafjordur Fjord. One of the most special areas is the Lake Myvatn area. This exotic region is a nature preserve that attracts North American and European birdlife (especially May and June). Formed by volcanic activity, the area is a wonderland of craters, basalt columns, multi colored steam vents and dark lava citadels.

This trip combines the chance to experience the midnight sun in the Reykjavik area and North Iceland. You'll have time to explore the Scandinavian charm of Akureyri as well as the volcanic mysteries of Myvatn. You'll even get to enjoy a late evening swim in a geothermal lake with the sky still under bright daylight.

The best time to experience the longest daylight is between mid May and mid July. This chart shows sunrise and sunset times in Akureyri.

Day 1: Flight from UK to Reykjavik (KEF) and overnight at Fosshotel Reykjavik (or similar). If flying from London, we recommend the earlier flight so that you can relax and have the entire evening to spend in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Fly to Akureyri in the morning. The 45 minute flight departs from Reykjavik domestic airport which is situated a short taxi ride away from the hotel.  If it's a clear day, you'll enjoy fantastic views of Iceland's interior including glaciers, lava fields and lakes along the way.

Upon arrival at Akureyri domestic airport, you will be picked up by a local driver and taken to the Icelandair Hotel Akureyri (or similar). Check-in at the hotel is not until 2pm, so if your room is not yet ready, you can store your luggage at the hotel and head for the town until the tour starts at 1pm.

Today's tour starts at 1pm, but please be in your hotel lobby no later than 12:45pm. The first stop is at the beautiful Godafoss waterfalls on the way to Lake Myvatn. Continue to the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Citadels), an area full of lava pillars and formations that are rich of mystic sagas and tales. From there, drive to the warm underground river in Grotagja rift before heading to the geothermal area of Hverir with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits.

Krafla volcano area is the next destination in this tour and we drive past the power station bearing the same name, relying on geothermal steam energy for its operation. We then come to the explosion crater Viti, formed in 1724 in the Myvatnseldar eruption. The area offers a beautiful view over distant Leirhnjukur volcano.

Enjoy dinner at a local countryside restaurant. (Choices include fish, meat or vegetarian main courses). After dinner, visit the magical Myvatn Nature Baths where you can relax in a completely natural pool of geothermal water based amid lava fields.

At around 10:30pm we drive back to Akureyri and enjoy the beautiful Arctic midnight sun shining over-head (weather permitting).

Day 3Enjoy Akureyri at your leisure, a town of charming buildings cradled within the magnificent Eyjafjordur Fjord.  Though small in size, Akureyri is vibrant and lively, offering many museums, restaurants and pubs.  The year-round botanical gardens are an interesting feature, as well as the spa-like geothermal swimming pool.

Day 4: Local driver will take you to the domestic airport in Akureyri for your late morning flight to Reykjavik. Upon arrival at Reykjavik domestic airport, taxis are available for the short ride to your hotel. Kindly note that check-in at your hotel is at 2pm, so if your room is not ready, you can leave your luggage at the reception and head to down town to spend the day in the Icelandic capital as you wish. Popular activities include horse riding in the nearby lava fields, a visit to the Blue Lagoon or whale watching from Reykjavik harbour. These and other tours and activities are available as add-ons to this package.

Day 5: Departure back to the UK.

Please note: Ground arrangements (including domestic flights) will be confirmed within 3-4 days and emailed to you from Iceland Travel.
