Day 1: Arrival
Flight from UK to Reykjavik (KEF) and overnight at Reykjavik Hotel Natura (map) or similar. If flying from London, we recommend the earlier flight so that you can relax and have the entire evening to spend in Reykjavik.
Day 2: Husafell
Enjoy the plentiful Scandinavian breakfast buffet at your hotel before the day's adventure starts at 9:00am. Be sure to be in your hotel lobby no later than 8:30am with your luggage for that evening's overnight stay. Your journey starts with a trip through an undersea tunnel to Borgarfjordur in West Iceland. This region was one of the first to be settled by Vikings, and is featured in the famous Icelandic Sagas such as Laxdaela Saga. The area is characterized by forests and rocky islands, or bluffs rising from vast wetlands, as well as lava fields covered with moss and boundless stretches of small silver birches. Various trout and salmon rivers and many beautiful waterfalls frame the region, which stretches into the highland wilderness, the site of Langjokull Glacier.
During the drive you'll visit Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring area in Europe. With an average temperature of 94°F (34°C), the water provides heating and hot water to nearby communities. You´ll also visit Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of 2,953 feet (900 meters) out of a lava field. The tour stops for lunch at Husafell, the area where you will overnight. Please remember lunch is not included in the holiday package, but several dining options are available in the area.
Once checked in you will have the day open for your own leisure activities. There are numerous activities to choose from in the Husafell area including lava caves to explore with optional guided tours. You can also take in the area´s interesting folklore and history on a self-guided, marked hiking tour of the Husafell area. The eclectic artist Pall Gudmundsson, known for his mystical stone paintings, natural musical instruments, and musical collaborations with best-selling Icelandic rock band Sigur Ros, is a native of Husafell. His studio is located here, and his stone art can be found through the area. If you like it more relaxed, you can simply stay close to the hotel, enjoy the pool and hot tubs and the surrounding peace and quiet.
After dinner your group will learn about the natural phenomenon of the northern lights, and have the opportunity to witness the magnificent Aurora Borealis from the comfort of the luxury hotel. Hotel Husafell is situated in the shelter of mountains and glaciers, which results in unique weather conditions favorable to the appearance of this extraordinary phenomenon. For the adventure seekers, headlamps are provided for outdoor walking during the dark nights under the starlit sky. Keep in mind that although the location of Husafell is ideal for viewing northern lights, they are a natural phenomenom, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Day 3: Ice Cave Iceland - A Journey into the Glacier
Enjoy the delicious breakfast at your hotel, then leisure time during the morning to explore the area and relax in the local geothermal pool. Check out of the hotel and depart around noon. Your journey heads towards Langjokull glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland. Please remember to bring suitable cold weather clothing for the glacier conditions, including a warm, waterproof outer coat and suitable footwear for wintry, icy conditions.
Journey into the highland interior with its vast landscapes crowned by Iceland's second largest glacier, Langjokull. At the edge of the glacier, you´ll switch to an 8-wheel glacier truck that brings you on an adventerous journey onto Langjokull. En route, you´ll learn how glaciers are formed and why they're important to the environment of Iceland, and our planet. The journey time to the ice tunnel varies, based on the weather and the route conditions.
With your guide and other visitors, you'll enter the Into the Glacier experience to begin your journey through the LED-lighted walls of the sheer-carved tunnels. Extending approximately 650 feet (200 meters) into the glacier, you'll head towards a natural ice cave and the stunning blue ice that lies at the glacier’s heart. You’ll be able to walk to the middle of a crevasse on a specially-constructed bridge to fully appreciate this natural marvel and discover interesting information about Langjokull glacier from inside the glacier. You’ll learn interesting facts about glacial exploration and research on climactic impacts on glaciers. Within the tunnel walls you can even visit a small chapel. The time within the ice cave may vary, but you should expect to be inside for approximately one hour. Once you leave the glacier you’ll be able to enjoy the surrounding glacier scenery, take photos and walk around the ice in the immediate vicinity. Your group will then board the special vehicle to head back down the glacier and drive by bus back to Reykjavik, arriving around 6:30pm - 7:00pm.
