Amsterdam; big, small ... and liberal
Perhaps the most liberal nation in Europe, the Netherlands has a distinct culture all its own. From the famous windmills, wooden shoes and tulips to the infamous coffee shops and red light district, there is no mistaking Amsterdam for any other Icelandair destination! Geographically speaking, the Netherlands, on the coast of the North Sea, is twice the size of New Jersey with a population of 16 million, making it the 15th most densely populated country in the world. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands is a big city, yet you will get the feeling that it is much smaller with its easy-going atmosphere, giving it an almost village-like feel. There are tantalizing arts and eats, as the city is packed with galleries, museums and fabulous restaurants. After your cheap flight to Amsterdam simply pull up a seat at any of the countless outdoor cafés, order a local beer with some French fries and mayonnaise and watch the parade of people pass by.
You´re expecting windmills in Amsterdam?
Holland is below sea level, nothing to be worried about though, rather something that makes the place all the more interesting. Instead of damming rivers for electricity, the Dutch dam the sea to keep it out. One of their fondest local folk tales is of a young boy who discovers a crack in the dam and can only save the land by sitting by the crack, plugging it with his finger, for a whole night, until help finally arrives. While you may not come across this boy, you will certainly meet many local characters who are sure to make you smile.
